Pictures of Conor

dave

12:54 AM

Here's a picture of Conor as taken by a nice lady, Miss Suen, who was sitting next to us at the restaurant tonight. Conor was being his usual charming self, dribbling over anyone who'd pick him up but doing so very cutely. Meanwhile, his sister was being grumpy. The lady in the shot is Miss Suen.

Conor

Not that I forgot, but we didn't do much yesterday, yesterday was Conor's first birthday!

We're having a party for him today, with some other kids, and hopefully some of the pictures will eventually make their way onto the various pages here.

Conor

Family members will be delighted to learn that Conor is now walking. He's quite strong on his legs and the only reason he crawls now is to get around faster.

Conor Well

dave

12:00 AM

Conor is out of hospital for the night, although we have to bring him back tomorrow to make sure that his fever is gone. He's been pretty well today, playing mostly, with bursts of sleeping. He's been in good humour too, which is more his his usual self, as he's very rarely grumpy.

Parents gone home

dave

12:00 AM

The parents have been put on the next best thing to the plane: the "Airport Express". This is a train which goes directly from Central district to the airport. It's a great arrangement: you can check in your baggage at Central and hop on the train with only your carry on baggages. This brings you directly to the airport and onto your flight with no further worries about rushing to get to the airport to check in. Now if only if didn't cost so much...

Parents in Town

dave

12:00 AM

My folks are in town for the next two weeks, seeing their first grandson for the first time and being tourists.

Link of the Day: Big White Guy.com is an interesting site with plenty of stories of life in Hong Kong. I like the site; he writes well and affectionately about life here. Also, his site design is clean and elegant. Good stuff Randall. He does have a lot of paranoid nonsense about crime in Hong Kong, which is probably coming from his wife. The absolute rubbish about being afraid to put your wallet in your back pocket is the kind of tripe which comes from an addict of the local trashy newspapers.

We've bought a Flat!

dave

12:00 AM

Our relatives already know this, but we've bought a flat! It's in the Fortress Hill part of Hong Kong Island, quite close to the MTR. It's down a very quiet area and surprisingly quiet and village-like for the area. It's 1120 square feet in area (about 100 square meters).

It looks like we'll be able to move in to the new place in about two weeks or so. Moving the broadband connection may take a while and some miscellaneous weirdness may happen while it's being moved. While I do have a backup mail server in a different location, there may be a chance that email will fall through the cracks. If this happens (you'll get a bounce/failure to deliver message) you can resend it after I get the site back up. Check back weekly!

The first month with Conor

dave

12:00 AM

It's been a month since the last update, but we've just been busy being new parents. Conor's very well behaved - he only cries when he actually needs something as opposed to all the time like some babies. He's very good at sleeping in his own cot as well. I've taken pictures of Conor every week since he was born. These will also go up on his page at some point. He had his one month inoculations the other day, and he was weighed and measured at the same time. All normal and according to plan, which is good. He's 56cm and 4.95 kg now, at 5 weeks old.

Meanwhile, Roxanne's started school! OK, it's only kindergarten, but she already has to wear a little uniform and has a schoolbag full of books. Luckily for us, the school is next door to our building, so I can drop her down to school in the mornings if I'm leaving for work around nine am. I've taken a picture of her in her school uniform, which I'll put up here at some point.

Busy

dave

12:00 AM

I got quite a few updates to the site done over the weekend. As mentioned below, Conor now has his own pages which will grow over time with more pictures. This will be just like Roxanne's page, which was also updated with plenty of new pictures from her birthday party.

More

dave

12:00 AM

Conor and Sanley are safely installed at home now. Conor's fast asleep with mummy, and Roxanne is tucked up in her bed. I'd forgotten how dependent newborns are, as Roxanne is very independent these days.

A New Arrival

dave

12:00 AM

Well, he's finally come out. Conor Kieran O'Brien was born this morning in Pamela Youde Nethersole Eastern Hospital, Hong Kong. He was 3.645 kg and 50cm long at birth (that's 8 lbs and 20" for any non-metric types). Conor's Page has some pictures.

July 26, 2002

Another false alarm.

dave

12:00 AM

We spent yesterday in Pamela Youde hospital after Sanley started having contractions every five minutes for an hour. Of course when we got there, the contractions stopped. We got home about five o'clock, with no prospect of the little fella coming out.

Finally, a name!

dave

12:00 AM

Well, we decided on a name for the impending baby. Nope, I'm not going to reveal it here. We'll wait until he's born, just in case he is a she. Due date is around the end of July, although Roxanne was a few weeks late.

Short holidays

dave

12:00 AM

I took a few days off work last week and we went up to China. Kaiping, to be precise, in Southern GuangDong. I'll do a write up at some point, probably when I get the films back.

Yesterday was the festival of Cheung Yeung, when Chinese people visit their ancestors graves and clean them. They also burn offerings and usually manage to set mountains alight. See http://hongkong.scmp.com/ZZZ8V1532TC.html although that link will probably go off after a few days.

Moved

dave

12:00 AM

Well, we've moved, found ourselves a domestic helper and generally settled into Tin Hau. the flat's quite big, and old and we've had to do a bit of decorating and plumbing.

Wow, I made a high rating Slashdot comment! See my comment here and see the whole discussion here.

April 19, 2001

Moving!

dave

12:00 AM

OK, we're moving house over the next weekend. Phone number remains unchanged. We're moving down to the Tin Hau area, just a few stops along the Island Line from Wan Chai, where we are currently.

Someone commented that some of these pages look funny in Netscape 4.7. That's down to a bug in Netscape, I'm afraid. If you go to another site and then come back to here the pages should look much better. Or you could use a different browser. Mozilla is pretty good, and Internet Explorer, as much as I don't like to encourage the use of Microsoft products, is ok as a browser too.

Coming up soon is Wanchai Live! with all sorts of bands making lots of noise in The Wanch and Carnegies on the 5th and 6th of May starting at midday and continuing until the wee hours. For a full list of who's playing see outside The Wanch and Carnegies, where the list should be on display.

As usual with this event, a percentage of all takings goes to the Kely Charity.

A new arrival

dave

12:00 AM

Roxanne David O'Brien and Sandra Tse Shuk Chun are pleased to announce the birth of their first-born, a daughter, Roxanne Gabrielle O'Brien (On Hiu Cheng, in Chinese) on 27 June, 2000. Roxanne was 3.39kg (7.5lbs) at birth and about 50cm long.

In response to the most frequently asked question, no, she is *NOT* named after that song by the Police. We just liked the name, and so did the baby in the womb when we read it out to her.
