So Beautiful

dave

10:45 AM

One thing which is notable about Australia is the amount of music playing on the radio by people you've never heard of unless you're from there.

One song which I heard everywhere I went was 'So Beautiful' by Pete Murray. It's haunting and beautiful and has a very clean and elegant mix. You can listen to 'So Beautiful' if you have RealPlayer.

Bob Geldof

dave

11:27 AM

"It's strangely comforting that, after all these years, and despite being a millionaire several times over, Geldof still manages to give the impression that he sleeps in a skip with a family of badgers."

There's a great interview with Bob Geldof here.

Playing again!

dave

12:07 AM

Next Saturday at the Globe on Hollywood Road there's a Folk Society musical night. It's free to get in and it starts about 7:30pm-ish. Music will be provided by:

  • Chris Hoskins
  • Dave O'Brien
  • David Dudgeon
  • Pete and Iris Benzie
  • July Levy (back from Australia for a while)
  • Atlantic Bridge

Yep, that's my name up there. It'll be the first time I've played in public since Wanchai Live back in June, so I'd better practice!

Don't worry about the 'Folk' aspect - it's not all woolly jumpers and fingers stuck in ears. These nights are a good night of live music which isn't blasting your ears off. Anything and everything from Jazz through Beatles through Richard Thompson to Pop songs, and even the occasional Diddly-Aye.

Also, the beer's good in the Globe, and the prices are usually reasonable. The Globe is under the Escalator on Hollywood Road, Central.

Off Kilter

dave

07:03 PM

I've just downloaded the most amazing MP3 - it's by a band named 'Off Kilter' and its a rendition of that old Dick Dale and the DelTones song: Misirlou. (The Pulp Fiction theme). Why is it so good? It's played with the Bagpipes!

The band's official website is: Off Kilter Web Site and it features Corkman Mark Weldon among others.

Graceland

dave

12:00 AM

I'm listening to the Paul Simon Anthology at the moment. The reason I'm playing it is that my son picked it out of the CD rack and brought it over. Complete fluke, as he's only eight months old.

This is a double CD. The first CD is full of the Simon and Garfunkel stuff. The second CD is magic: it's the South African stuff he recorded against the wishes of many people. All those wonderful liquid fretless bass lines by Bagithi Khumalo, almost the only constant on the album. Fantastic stuff. Paul Simon was pilloried initially for recording in a South Africa divided by Apartheid, but I think his great achievement was showing that there was great music there, despite the political system. Bagithi Khumalo is an extraordinary bass player. Why doesn't everyone try to play like him? (It's bloody hard, is why.) That wonderful fluid, fretless bass style is seriously hard work. Whenever I try and cover a song from the 'Gracelands' album, I have even more respect for the superb musicians Paul Simon recorded with. That album is one of the reasons I have a fretless bass. I suspect that it'll be considered one the the canonical albums of western music.

Aftermath.

dave

12:00 AM

Well, that was fun. I'm referring to Wanchai Live, of course. Twenty four hours of noise, beer, noise, heat, sweat, more noise, more beer and the occasional musical interlude. Next year I'm definitely not carrying around that GT-5 again. The damn thing's way too heavy. Also, I think I'll play the ukulele instead. Or maybe the triangle.

less than one week to go

dave

12:00 AM

It's less than one week to go until Wanchai Live VII. Taking place in The Wanch and Carnegies pubs on Saturday 11th and Sunday 12th of May, Wanchai Live is twenty four hours of live music. From noon to midnight both days, a new band every hour. If you're in Hong Kong and feel like a beer and some music (or even lunch - the pub grub in both places is ok), stroll along to either venue and check things out.

The Wanch is at 54 Jaffe Road, Wan Chai, and Carnegies is at 53-55, Lockhart Road, Wan Chai, just around the corner or so.

I'm playing in the afternoon on both days, and there should be a list of acts pasted up on the windows of both pubs.

Another Kely Karnival

dave

12:00 AM

I probably should have posted this up sooner, but there was another Kely Karnival on the Peak last Sunday, 15/05/01. It was a cold day, but the Bastards were playing, and that was pretty good.

I played too, of course, my usual acoustic stuff.
