What a goal! All the way down to the wire, and the Man of the Tournament, Jonny Wilkinson, uses his non-magic right foot to put that trophy in England's hands.
I just hope we don't keep hearing about this world cup win for the next forty years.

To be fair to England (why?), Wilkinson is an amazing talent. 50 metres, that kick was. Bloody marvellous.

You may wonder why I'm cheering for Australia. It's all to do with Five Nations Etiquette. A Celt (someone from Ireland, Scotland, Wales or France) should cheer for their own team first, and then cheer for another Celtic nation. It is only permissible to cheer for England if they're not playing a Celtic nation, or they're playing someone really odious, like the Nazis, or South Africa. Australia and New Zealand are deemed to be Honorary Celts for the purposes of cheering.
However, you are always allowed to cheer for the underdog.
I'm watching the Rugger on Star Sports, and the commentators are Australians. There is no pretence at fair an unbalanced commentary. They've just started saying things like "England hasn't won a football world cup since 1966, a Davis cup since 1936."
Go on Elton!
Yeesssssss! Good on ya mate!
Come on ya Wallabies!

Wanchai is heaving, so I decided that I'd come back and watch the Rugby from home. 11:14 in England's favour at the moment.

Real Madrid vs Hong Kong

Real Madrid, possibly the best football team in the world at the moment, played Hong Kong in the Hong Kong Stadium tonight (well, Friday night, really). Hong Kong lost 2 goals to 4. That's quite an achievement as they're only a club side, not a major international football team like Real Madrid. I think that Hong Kong are the only team on Real Madrid's current Asian tour to score against them. You should have heard the cheers in Carnegies as that first goal went in. Lots of people obviously either considered themselves Hong Kongers, or wanted to cheer for the underdogs. Mind you, Real Madrid have made a very good effort to alienate their fans here by not turning up to training sessions, or turning up late, or allegedly having been paid HKD 36 Million, which is 50% more that that paid by any other country.

If you were to see me now, you'd do a double take. I've dug out my swimming goggles in preparation for going down to the Pool with the kids in a few minutes. In an attempt to work out which side is which, I'm wearing them now. "Which side is which?" Well, they're prescription goggles, and my eyes are slightly different diopters, so I'm wearing them to figure out which way around is right.
We normally go down to Victoria Park, which is a few minutes walk away from here. It's free on Sundays in July, but it's not that expensive at other times.
Roxanne likes swimming, although she's quite nervous and needs her flotation aids. Conor is funny - he likes being in his floating ring and seems to have a good time smiling at people. He even kicks a little and will try to move himself around by splashing his hands. Not bad for a one year old.

Ah, the beautiful game. Ireland's journey came to an end last night with a penalty defeat by Spain. Not a good way to go out, and I felt that Ireland played better during the match - they just seemed to not be able to get the ball in the net.
A bit of a scrappy match, with a lot of off the ball nastiness.
England-Brazil should be good on Friday.

| Ireland, Ireland, Uber Alles! Fifa World Cup Official Website | What a goal - real Roy of the Rovers stuff. | Now we've just got to trounce Saudi Arabia and we're away. |
Meanwhile, you'll notice a few stylistic changes here. I've been setting it up using Mozilla 1.0 as the viewer, and it looks far better in that than it does in IE. Can someone at Microsoft please actually read the web standards? Thank you.
Also, diaspoir.net is now up and running as a virtually hosted site on the same server as this one. (More about the server)

World Cup, Tienanmen Square

It's the 13th anniversary of the Tienanmen Square crackdown today. The candlelight vigil in Victoria park is down in numbers this year because of the World Cup: China is at their first ever Cup, and Chinese people the world over are going: "Who the heck are Costa Rica, and how did they trounce us so easily?" I mean, two-nil! W00t! Suddenly I have high hopes for Ireland in this cup. One-all against the African champions Cameroon, Germany aren't strong this year and Saudi Arabia seem to be trying to play a different game - probably table tennis or tiddlywinks. Whatever that was they were playing it wasn't football.
