Saudi Arabia
Lonely Planet Guide to Saudi Arabia and the Arabian Gulf States
I worked in Saudi (near Ras Tanurah) for a few months in 1993. That's quite close to Dahran, where the mosque pictured on the right is. This was a few years after the Gulf War, so there were still lots of troops in the area. It's a bleak place, but fascinating sometimes. Taking photographs is frowned on in Saudi Arabia, so mostly, I just took snaps from inside the car while driving. There's not too much good photography from that time in my collection.
There is no tourism in Saudi, but there are some very old cities on the East coast which may have been inhabited since the dawn of civilisation. The eastern part of the country is close to the UAE and Bahrain.
For some reason, they put statues at road intersections. Here are two -- On the left is a hookah pipe, on the right a pestle.
Driving's pretty hazardous in Saudi - here's my spiffy wheels I had when there. Complete with annoying beeper which went off at speeds in excess of 75kph. It was wired into the Air-con circuit too, so you couldn't get rid of it without cooking yourself in the car.
